NEW WEALDEN FARMHOUSE

When the neighbouring farm to their historical barn came on the market, the clients were faced with the prospect of the land being developed for housing. Instead, they bought the farm themselves, taking on its small dilapidated house and modern barns.

The challenge was to replace the irreparable farmhouse and redundant outbuildings with a new home that felt natural in its South Downs village setting.

Our key reference points were three listed farmhouses in the village, which shared common characteristics. Our proposal closely follows the form and materials of these houses, though we have opened up the internal layout to make the most of the site’s exceptional views of the South Downs.

At a glance the house appears to be a traditional Wealden farmhouse, but closer inspection reveals that there is a bright, spacious home inside, designed with life today in mind.
